How to Get a Marriage License in North Carolina
North Carolina issues marriage licenses through each county's Register of Deeds. The license costs $60, is valid for 60 days from issue, requires no waiting period, and is valid statewide — you can apply in any county and marry in any other.
The basics
Cost: $60, payable to the Register of Deeds at time of issue (most counties accept cash and card; some require cash). Validity: 60 days from the date issued. Waiting period: none — you can marry the same day. Blood test: not required. Residency: not required for either party.
What you need to bring
Both parties must appear in person at the Register of Deeds. Bring a valid government photo ID (driver license, passport, or state ID), your Social Security number (the card itself is not required, just the number), and — if previously married — the date the most recent marriage ended. If a prior spouse died, the death date. If divorced, the divorce date. Minors (16-17) need parental consent and a court order; under 16 cannot marry in NC.
How to apply
Find your county's Register of Deeds office (most are at the county courthouse). Many counties now offer an online pre-application — you fill out the form ahead of time, then both appear in person to sign and pay. Walk-in is always allowed during office hours. Processing is same-day: you leave with the license in hand.
After the ceremony
Your officiant completes the license and returns it to the issuing Register of Deeds within 10 days. The county then records the marriage and mails you a certified copy (or you can purchase additional copies for around $10 each). You'll need certified copies to change your name on a Social Security card, driver license, or passport.
