Where to Get a Marriage License in North Carolina
Every North Carolina county issues marriage licenses through its Register of Deeds, typically located at the county courthouse. The license is valid statewide, so you can apply in the county closest to home and hold your ceremony anywhere in NC.
Most popular Register of Deeds offices
Wake County (Raleigh) — Wake County Justice Center, downtown. Online pre-application available. Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) — Government Center uptown. Online pre-application available. Buncombe County (Asheville) — College Street courthouse. Walk-in only; expect a line at peak season. Durham County — Downtown Durham, online pre-application. New Hanover (Wilmington) — Princess Street courthouse, walk-in.
Hours and what to expect
Most Register of Deeds offices are open Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (some close at 4:30). Marriage licenses are typically issued until 30 minutes before close — call ahead if you're cutting it close. Bring both parties, both IDs, and payment. Plan 20-45 minutes including the wait.
Out-of-state couples
There is no residency requirement. If you're flying in for a destination wedding, apply in the county you'll be staying in — most popular destinations (Asheville, Wilmington, Outer Banks) have offices well-equipped for visiting couples.
